1998: Bailing Out.

Adjusting to "live" pitching is a challenge for kids in baseball. Mike was no different. One of his first games that year and first times at bat offers a prime example of this. Mike was scheduled to bat fourth. 2 of the 3 kids in front of him get hit. His predecessor at the plate takes one square between the shoulders in the back and goes down in a weeping pile.

Once that gets straightened out our budding Babe Ruth strides fearlessly to the plate. Two things happen simultaneously on the first pitch. Mike swings and flops backward convinced that he's going to take one himself in the back or worse. Time is called so he can compose himself. Two strikes later he's gone. Strike three is a ball almost over his head.

This will be a common theme throughout his baseball career.
